Q. I recently purchased a vehicle and don’t want to end up with huge out-of-pocket expenses if something major happens to go wrong. I never purchased an extended warranty. How do I select or know if this is a good deal or not? I’ve heard it covers engine, transmission, gaskets, etc. —Barb K.

A. You have to be careful with purchasing an extended warranty. Looking at what it does cover is one thing, but you have to also see what it DOESN’T cover. Look for topics such as who can or can’t repair the vehicle, or if it requires a specific network of shops. If you do have to take it to a shop in their network, is there a hidden deductible?
