In this issue, we visit Canada, our wonderfully diverse neighbor to the north, steeped in rich history and blessed with magnificent natural beauty, quaint towns and bustling cities.
Ive visited Canada since I was a child. Many vacations to Canada inspire fond memories: riding the Maid of the Mist in Niagara Falls, taking the train to Toronto, camping and hiking through Ontarios beautiful countryside.
We often visited St. Josephs Lake in Northern Ontario. I recall the first time I stepped off the boat dock at our camp to swim. The water was so incredibly clear that, from the surface, it appeared to be only a couple of feet deep and the sandy bottom an arms length away. But, it was a cold surprise when I stepped off the dock and into the water. I immediately went eight feet to the bottom!
The fishing was so plentiful, my father was compelled to continue to cast even as darkness turned. We froze what we couldnt eat and later relived our vacation memories through fish dinners.
In our feature story, On to Ontario, we visit Montreal and Torontoboth known for their culture and charm. In the Via Rail story by Peter Warwick, we travel by train through the countryside. Rail travel is a great way to see this fascinating province.
Also in this issue, we take a look at Nashvilles popular Fan Fair, where you can see all your favorite country stars at one 4-day event. Over 100,000 people will make the trek to attend this popular celebration.
Yvonne Michie Horn journeys through the Antebellum South aboard the Nantucket Clipper. Youll visit the historic towns of Savannah, Charleston and St. Augustine, the oldest city in the United States.
