Music weaves through the fabric of Irish life, from small rural cottages to the great concert halls of Dublin. It’s a way of life for the warm, charming folks of this lyrical land. Irish pubs are known worldwide for their joyful music and dance. Conversation and laughter are as warm as the food, served up with a frothy glass of Guinness or a steaming cup of Irish tea.

In County Mayo, Uncle John Barrett welcomed us into his home for a chat and a visit. He lives in the quaint and comfortable cottage that’s been in the family for generations. We warmed our toes on a turf fire while he entertained us with lively Irish tunes played on the button accordion. The view from the cottage window was a breathtaking collage of rolling green hills, fragrant heather and lush trees set against a mountain backdrop.

In this issue’s story, “Wandering the Emerald Isle,” we journey to Ireland to explore the magnificent beauty, gracious people and ancient history of this land.

Also in this issue, Brenda Cotter explores great vacation destinations in New York State. Recent attention has focused on New York City, but the rest of the state offers an intriguing range of fun and entertaining getaways. The Finger Lakes region is home to 25 state parks, including the striking Taughannock Falls State Park. The Adirondacks boast one of America’s most plentiful natural regions with 3000 clear lakes and 1500 miles of rivers. Artists and painters are drawn to the nature and beauty of Hudson Valley.
In this magazine, you’ll read about Philadelphia’s historic city hall. Through the years, the old city hall has been the subject of admiration and debate. Joe Curreri guides us through this American landmark on its 100th birthday.

Jim Burke takes us south of Myrtle Beach to Murrells Inlet, home to great seafood, fishing and hometown fun. Some of these sleepy towns are great vacation destinations and the genesis of remarkable travel adventures.

As we begin the new year, Americans are seeing signs of hope and a renewed sense of optimism for our country. Nothing inspires and satisfies the human spirit more than traveling and spending time with family and friends. From our family to yours, we wish you the very best for the New Year.
