Motorhomes have been around almost as long as the automobile. When the American public started traveling in their vehicles, they began looking for ways to make it more enjoyable and more convenient. Enter the Recreational Vehicle industry. These vehicles ran the gamut—from the sophisticated to the sublime.

In his pictorial essay, Mobile Mansions, photographer Douglas Keister documents an amazing range of vehicles, including small camp cars from the 1920s, house cars from the 1930s, campers from the 1950s, and finally, modern-day motorhomes that first emerged in the 1960s.
