Money Tips While
Traveling Abroad

Traveling abroad has gotten easier and is more popular than ever. But before you go, have a plan in place to access cash or make purchases. Never carry large amounts of cash. It's best to use a combination of accessible cash and purchase options when traveling, such as debit/credit cards, foreign currency and travel money cards. For more information about these travel money options, visit aaa.com/financial.

AAA Visa TravelMoney Cards

A great option that provides an added level of security is the AAA Visa TravelMoney® card, which can be used at millions of locations that accept Visa debit and ATM cards. The prepaid, reloadable card allows you to choose the dollar value of the card and is more secure than cash. Each card comes with the benefit of AAA Global Advantage Service, Visa Purchase Security and Visa Emergency Assistance Services, and Zero Liability Protection. AAA Visa Travelers Cheques are another simple alternative for cash and purchases.

Credit/Debit Cards

Some credit cards can be used worldwide, even for cash advances. Check with your bank or credit card company to see if there are fees associated with using your card in another country. Alert your bank or credit card company if you are traveling abroad. Overseas purchases may set off a red flag that someone has stolen your credit card or identity. While abroad, be sure to use a AAA credit card that offers a 1 percent foreign exchange rate fee. Most banks charge a 3 percent fee for the same service. If using a debit card, check to make sure the country or countries you're visiting have Automated Teller Machine (ATM) service. Your bank should be able to tell you if you can use your ATM card during your trip abroad.

Use an ATM at a reputable hotel or bank, if possible. Independent machines may have much higher fees. Record your credit card and bank contact number, and keep these in a safe and separate place in case your card is lost or stolen. Leave all unnecessary credit cards at home. Immediately report the loss or theft of your credit cards or travelers checks to the credit card companies and to the local police.

Foreign Currency

Before departing, you may wish to obtain small amounts of foreign currency to use for buses, taxis, phones or tips when you first arrive from your bank or select AAA offices. Once abroad, banks and exchange facilities are your best bet for receiving current exchange rates for your U.S. dollars. Avoid exchanging U.S. currency at local retailers who may shortchange you on the foreign currency exchange rate.
