Patriotism has reached an all-time high in America. And there’s never been a better time to explore the history and events that led up to the freedoms we enjoy today. Our forefathers were determined to protect the ideals and rights of the colonists. Colonists took a courageous stand against the stringent rules of the British government. This led to a historic series of compelling speeches, midnight raids and confrontations. The Revolutionary War was the culmination of these events.

In this issue, we take a look at vacations that offer visitors a peek into our nation’s history. “Red, White and Cool Vacations” takes you to four of the oldest cities in America: Philadelphia, Washington D.C., Boston and Colonial Williamsburg. Here you can walk the streets of Paul Revere’s famous ride and visit Independence Hall, the site where the U.S. Constitution and the Declaration of Independence were drafted. The Liberty Bell, one of our country’s most patriotic icons, is on display in Philadelphia. Colonial Williamsburg is a town complete with reconstructed colonial houses, working handcraftsmen and locals dressed in traditional garb. Visitors can immerse themselves into the everyday lives of the colonists.

Monuments and museums in Washington, D.C., bring recognition to the number of men and women who have given their lives for freedom, here and around the world. While a somber awakening, it gives new appreciation for our independence.

Also in this issue, Brad Adams provides an inside look into New York City, with a very New York perspective. He gives you the real scoop on local eateries and hidden treasures sprinkled throughout the city (like the 60-foot-high Ferris wheel inside Toys “R” Us on Broadway and 44th Street). In Times Square stop by the TKTS booth where you can get half-price seats to a Broadway Show.

Heading north, David Monforton explores the charming towns in the seaside state of Maine. Classic covered bridges and famous lighthouses dot the coastline and surrounding areas. Feast on the local fare while soaking up the spectacular landscape.

Nothing says America quite like the Grand Canyon. Stephen Wheeler takes us aboard the Grand Canyon Railway for a fun-filled ride to this spectacular feat of Mother Nature. As the train rumblestoward the rim of the canyon, a (terrifying) team of masked robbers entertains you.

This summer, enjoy the many wonderful destinations that give you insight and perhaps a better appreciation for the wondrous country we call America.
