At this time of year, many of us develop an
insatiable appetite for scrumptious Halloween treats. So we send our packs of trick-or-treaters on their annual pilgrimages, dressed in ghoulish costumes—and then gather around the table and marvel at the hordes of delectable sweets they unveil from their hunts.

Generations ago, Halloween candy makers were simply our moms in the kitchen, dividing their time between creating candied and toffee apples and sticky popcorn balls. Soon, manufacturers—inspired by this lucrative phenomenon—began creating a variety of Halloween candy of their own.

Today, the impeccable taste of Halloween candy reigns supreme and promises to satisfy all who indulge—trick-or-treaters or not.

Halloween's Long History

The Halloween tradition, as we know it today, was derived from ancient pagan rituals and later developed into respectable Halloween customs based on our Celtic heritage. The name Halloween comes from the Catholic day of observance, "All Hallows Day."

Candy Corn Reigns Supreme

Candy corn is perhaps the king of Halloween candy. These yummy treats are fashioned after the shape of corn kernels in commemoration of the harvest season. Candy corn was
introduced in the 1880s by the Wunderle Candy Company of Philadelphia. The Goelitz Confectionary Company in Cincinnati began commercial production of the treat in 1898, making it affordable for the masses.

Arguably the Most Popular Candy Bar

It's a testament to their tastiness that Snickers bars are the world's biggest-selling candy bar, with annual sales of $2 billion—and their fun-size bars are an absolute hit at Halloween. These tasty treats, coated with milk chocolate and loaded with peanuts, caramel and nougat, debuted in 1930 by the Mars family—who incidentally named the bar after one of their favorite horses. The best part is, there are only 80 calories per fun-size bar.

Disgustingly Gross Flavors

These tiny beans may be more suitable as a "trick" than a "treat." Bertie Bott's Every Flavor Beans set a new standard in repulsion. Introduced in the Harry Potter book series, these freakish delicacies are sought after by Potter fans and gourmet risk takers around the globe. The tiny jelly beans deliver a variety of vividly revolting flavors with tastes of mud, sausage, frog legs, ear wax and many more.
